panel changes won't stick

Hi all,
I've been having random hd problems (buying a new hd didn't help) for
quite a while now and I suspect this has done something to my top panel.
Any additions I make to it are lost next time I log in.
.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers have several copies each of firefox,
evolution and help launchers as well copies of any launchers I have aded
myself. The panel shows one copy each of Firefox, Evo and help. The
notification area I added works fine with my gaim and rhythmbox icons, but
not the weather applet or system monitor. Any suggestions? I'm on Warty
with some backports.
