Synaptic doesn't remember that is was maximized. Long term memory loss?

I've noticed exactly the same behaviour. I'm using 1024 x 768 and I have
the symptoms you described: not maximized and extending a few pixels
past the right edge of the screen. Even if I size the window down by
grabbing the edges, it's back as described after the next time I start
the program.
