automatic mount of usb-device

Hi,
when I installed Warty on my machine the usb support didn't work
correctly. There was no /dev/sde1 and so I weren't able to mount my usb
stick. After I searched the web I found a hint that this could be caused
by the kernel that Warty installs by default. So I took a 2.6.10 kernel
package that I compiled with Sarge. After I did this I were able to
mount my usb stick manually.
But it would be nice if my usb device could be mounted automatically
like my CDs. If I insert a CD it's automatically mounted, a window opens
and an icon appears on the desktop. That's a really nice feature. Does
this work with usb devices, too? How can I modify my system to get this
work? Have I configure the kernel in a special way? Or are there other
kernel images avialable that I could use instead of the default
2.6.8.1kernel that I could try out?
Thanks & Cheers,
Jochen
