Charset Encodings in Gnome

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem: I mounted a device (hda4) which is shared
with windows computers. The accents in the filenames look normal when I
see them with nautilus, but when I double-click them to open (for
example with openoffice), they fail to open because the accents turn to
messed up characters, and the app says: "file not found"!!

What is wrong? Is there some problem in encoding in Gnome or Ubuntu?
