Ho yes, Debian makes it almost a child's play! And using the graphical 
utility named synaptic, you don't have to learn how to use command line 
tools.

As an example, I update mine about everyday and thought it's the 
development branch, I only have encountered two serious problems in months.

Unless you need to apply patches, no. You will find a package named 
linux-image-2.6...-smp for your architecture using synaptic (check the 
Gnome menu).
