If we're talking about the cheap so called hardware RAID IDE/sata cards
that have been appearing in recent times then you need to be aware that
they are actually software RAID; the hardware does nothing or almost
nothing and the RAID work is done by the supplied driver. Real hardware
RAID sata controllers cost several hundred euro.
Fake hw raid controllers are to be avoided since there's no guarantee
that in the event of trouble you'll be able to get the data off with
either a rescue disk, or by attaching the drives to another controller.
I suppose that if you're using Windows you're stuck with it (although at
one stage windows did have built in software RAID) but if you're using
Linux you're much better off using the well tested and well supported md
software raid system and just using the fake-raid card as a plain
IDE/sata controller.
