There's the key.  I upgrade Warty to Hoary after only two or three
days and hadn't installed any source packages from outside ubuntu. 
When I apt-get dist-upgrade All went extremely smoothly and I've ended
up with a fully stable laptop system.  Install programs from source
would likely effect the upgrade process.
