I have some problems with vesafb after recompiling kernel

I have a Toshiba SatellitePro6000 laptop and I try to recompile the
kernel since I wish to have suspend to disk. Now after recompiling when
I boot I can't have a framebuffer hi-res console, which works perfectly
with original kernel. I have tryed all possible modes in
/boot/grub/menu.lst: vga=771 vga=0x318, vga=791 but I even have a black
screen.
Has anyone been able to get a framebuffer console with recompiled kernel?
