Are you compiling the vesafb driver as a module?. If so you need to create the directory /lib/modules/`uname -r`/initrd/ and put inside the module vesafb.ko. (there are other ways but this is what the Ubuntu kernels do). The run mkinitrd again. -- GilGalad
