would it be better to buy a soundcard then ?

xmms freezes the whole system solid :-)
music player/rhythmbox says "not playing" when fed a .wav
gstreamer-properties shows esd is the only access,
but even there i get no test sound.
sometimes i get the error that the sound server can't open the device.
