In all reality samba under Linux is a fairly good protocol. NFS is
insecure and has huge problems with locking. I believe that the next
version of NFS is supposed to fix these things but as of now Ubuntu
doesn't come with NFS for security reasons.

So, since neither of your Ubuntu's have the samba server they can only
connect to a server. In Windows there's no seperation between server
and client but in Linux there is.
