You may be surprised to know that this is a very common problem across
all laptop manufacturers.  I've had motherboards fail on Dell and
Compaq laptops before.  When you buy a laptop you should never expect
to replace important components like a motherboard or LCD after the
warranty expires, because unlike desktop machines they are proprietary
and go out of stock quickly.  What I mean is that you shouldn't expect
your laptop to continue functioning past the warranty date, and you
should factor this hidden experation cost into your purchasing
decision.
