That's strange, I don't think there's any such kernel in the Ubuntu
repository. Anyway, just install linux-686 (or whatever is appropriate for
your architecture).

You need to install linux-source-2.6.8.1

You can install fglrx-driver and linux-restricted-modules-* to make your video
card work.

apt-get remove <package>, <package>, ...

or use Synaptic when you manage to configure X.

try with ls -la $HOME, but if you're trying to configure the base system it
may not be the best place to look at.
