Synaptic crashes

If you run Computer->System Configuration->Synaptic Package Manager, and
enter the wrong password in the "Changing user..." window that pops, you
will get an error window that says "Failed to run /usr/sbin/synaptic as
user root: Child terminated with 1 status".  So the problem may simply
be entering the wrong password.  Be sure you enter *your*
password--even if you have created a root account.
