I have the same sharing-via-hub arrangement you describe earlier in
this thread.

Using an Administrator account, you can find your network settings in
Windows XP at Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Select
'Local Area Connection'. Select 'Change setting for this connection' in
the left sidebar. Your network devices are displayed. Select 'Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)' and click the Properties button. Your settings are
then displayed.

The default for an internal network is 192.168.7.x for the machine and
192.168.7.1 for the gateway - the DSL modem/router. The default subnet
mask is 255.255.255.0. Record your values and, most important, the DNS
server information - the IP address of one or two DNS servers,
originally provided by your ISP (there is an 'automatic' option, but
that, I think, is only for full-blown client-server networks).

Now, on your Ubuntu machine, go to Computer > System Configuration >
Network Settings. The Connections tab should show your ethernet
connection - probably as eth0. Make sure it's ticked as 'Active'.
Select this line and click the 'Properties' button. You can now select
configuration - Manual and fill in an IP address for the machine (same
as for your XP machine, except for changing the last digit so that they
are in the same domain, but the hub can tell them apart), fill in the
same subnet mask and the same gateway address. Click on the DNS tab,
type the first DNS address into the second box and click add. Repeat
for the second DNS address if you have one.

OK and close the windows. You should now be able to access the internet
via your Ubuntu machine.

Now you've caught up with me! To transfer my email, I intend to copy
the email file to a shared area on the XP machine that the Ubuntu
machine can 'see', copy across and import into Evolution. (I'm using
Mozilla on the XP machine, which I hope will make things easier.)
Making files on one machine accessible on the other is another story -
I'm only part-way there at the moment, so I won't offer advice.

Hope this helps.
