Obviously I don't know exactly what problems you had during
installation, or what you had to clean up, so I don't know what the
problem is.  Having said that, there is one thing I'd check early on in
the fault-finding process, which is whether your normal non-root users
have scanner use privilege.  Basically they need to be members of the
scanner group to be able to use it.

I'd look in System->Administration->Users and Groups, scanner is
probably group 108 (it is on my Breezy system).  If you select a user
name and check the properties you can see what the common user
privileges (group memberships) are and set or unset them.
