restoring gui

hi all,
i have got a p4 1.7 ghz machine
intel 845glad board
and 256 mb of ram
now the problem is that i dont get the gui back wen
i once switch to any of the tty's and then again
i press (alt+ctrl+f7) in breezy badger.
The system hangs instead....wat can i do ?
