No, although I have a display and CPU (Pentium P4-630) which was on
sale, and I was planning to order this week after asking for comments on
the builders message board. Someone there commented on trouble with the
SATA optical drive and Xandros Linux which made me wonder, so I thought
I'd check in here. Your comment got me looking around, and of course
most of the stuff I found was about problems. Why post if you don't
have a problem, right? :) Anyway, I started thinking it might be
better to play it safe and go with IDE. But, a couple of other guys
didn't seem to have any trouble, and I found a section in the book I
have about building PCs, and they said SATA drives should show up if the
board has the interface on it and the kernel is 2.4 or greater. So now
I'm leaning back towards going SATA again. I have to decide pretty
quick. Best Buy has a Seagate 200GB Ultra ATA/100 on sale through
tomorrow for $50 after rebates. They've been selling Seagate ATA drive
really cheap for quite a while now. Well -- now I'm babbling. Back to
parts: the board I've decided on at this point is an Intel 945PVS. It
looks good to my inexperienced eye, and reviews sounded good. Says it
has 4 serial ATA interfaces and one parallel ATA UDMA/33, with
ATA-66/100 support. I don't know what the "support" comment means.
Sounds like I'd need something extra if I went with the ATA/100 drive.
My original plan was to buy a Seagate SATA HD and a Plextor SATA
optical, and I'm leaning back towards that again. I'm hoping to avoid the
all the "little" frustrations you refer to though. A guy can spend a
fortune on blood pressure meds.
Thanks very much for the comments and info, Wade.
