Ubuntu Hangs

hi ,
I have a problem with ubuntu.
It was when i was about to change my system from Windows to Ubuntu that i
found this.
I am able to switch from GUI to tty(1-6) with out any problem by using the
keys 'alt+ctrl+f(1-6)'
But wen i press alt+ctrl+f7 to get back my GUI
the system hangs.I am using p4 1.7Ghz cpu
and Intel 845 GLAD board .Can anyone help me out of this.
