Can't get USB memory stick to work

I hate it when there's perfectly sensible reasons for things that
don't go my way instantly. :-| :)

Does anyone else know if there's a more 'Ubuntu way' (read: wimpier way) of
doing this?  But the fstab thing will surely work, of course..  I just
wonder if all users have to do this when they want to plug in a memory
stick or digital camera?

I suppose I could run the whole lot including Gnome as root... That
would take care of things. :)  (Never mind answering that, I know, I
know.. That's un-linux, the closest you can get to blasfemy in unix.. :)
