Thanks for your comments and those of Jan Moren.  I intend to persevere but, the
way things are set up, getting the system to a ready state will take time and
lots of it.  I'm no power user - just trying things out.  My other Linux system,
so far, makes Ubuntu look very shabby.  I would have preferred more tools rather
than OOo on the disk because, if I continue, I'll probably get the official
version of OOo rather than use the Ubuntu version.
