Don't mix things up! Ubuntu != Linux, GNOME != Linux. We have yet to see
if PC-BSD[1] ends up "dumbing down" FreeBSD...

There are other distributions that aren't about "dumbing down". Some
aren't as polished as Ubuntu is, they are surely not as sexy as Ubuntu
is at the moment...
