Well, I simply logged to www.vmware.com and picked-up Workstation 5.
But before that, I used version 4 on Hoary and it was just as fast with
Windows XP.

Yep, it's closed source commercial software. It's a 30 day trial
version, so if you like it, you will have to pay for it.

Qemu seems to be the most popular, but apparently judging by people's
comments on its speed, it's not quite yet an alternative to VMware
sadly.
I think I came across another Virtual Machine in Synaptic called "Bosch"
or something, but I don't know the state of it and never heard of anyone
actually using it.
