Screen shutting off and refusing to turn back on

I tried ctrl-alt-f1 when I was having this problem, to no good end (I
also tried the other function keys, including f7, as listed in the post
you mentioned), and I tried them after rebooting, and I verified that I
have no virtual terminals.
