Just to finish this thread off, I installed all the Avahi pieces and
it works as advertised -- I can browse all the services on the home
net. Unfortunately, it also has the drawback I expected: There doesn't
seem to be a way to *use* that printer that I can now see, directly. I
shared it over Windows for now. It works fine that way.

If I could spawn another me, it would be an interesting project to
attach mdns services to the CUPS interface somehow. With python-avahi,
I doubt it would be tough. I know there are several efforts to attach
to music streams from iTunes this way.
