Screen shutting off and refusing to turn back on

Are you sure it's just the screen?  It sounds like for the laptop
closing it might be trying to go into suspend mode, which has known
issues, especially if you are using the 3d-enabled drivers.  Look
around for answers on how to try to get suspend to work, including
using Suspend2 instead.



As for the "random" turning on and off: no clue sorry :(
