Sorry... no direct help for the original problem other than to say the
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg probably will fix your particular
problem.
On a related note:
Is there a problem with driver on Macs under Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy?)?
I'm having the OPPOSITE problem at the moment with my Mac mini:
X works, but when I switch to one of the terminals the monitor goes to
sleep. Switch back to X (control-alt (option)-F7) and the screen wakes
up.
The splash screen also doesn't display, unless I append 'video=ofonly'
at initial boot in yaboot (in which case the vterminals also work).
