I don't know why when a linux user from another distribution asks about 
enabling root there is such a hysterical dogmatic frenzy of defenses of 
sudo.  Linux *always* has the ability to use root, or it is simply not 
linux.  I assume that these are the same people that used to be 
networked MSWindows admins.  Like you, I have several Linux distros on 
my machine and no way for anyone outside to get in.  It's a personal 
decision how I set up my own box.
