It would appear that on Dec 11, David Hart did say:

As to why not give sudo a chance...
Well...
<rant>
I don't run a server that others can access. MY personal PC has 4
actively usable linux distros available to me at all times (save when I'm
configuring a new one or when I just broke one <grin>) And NONE of them
are configured to allow logins from any remote system. (all ports are
blocked. {heck I don't even boot win98 to play an old game without
disabling my cable modem...})
I'm currently working a third shift job that combined with my lady's
demands on my usable "conscious" time leaves precious little for my
hobby. So little in fact that if I didn't have an knee injury putting me
out of work for about a week I wouldn't have dared to even consider
installing an unfamiliar linux distro to my multi-boot PC.
If I spend the time getting accustomed to other peoples ideas of the
right tools for the administration of my pc instead of using the same
ones I routinely use on ALL my linux systems then I won't have enough
time to make ubuntu usable to me...
The list of things I need to get done before going back to work if I'm
going to keep ubuntu includes but isn't limited to.
Get familiar enough with apt-get and use it to totally replace gnome with
kde.
Get ubuntu to boot at run level 3, and install some basic necessity
console applications that I can't function well without, ( mc, & pine come
to mind.)
Remember how to configure said console applications. before putting the
config files in /etc/skel so that I can start creating the login (s) I
will actually use on a daily basis (each of which will be created with
the same user ID as they have on all the other linux file-systems on my
machine and in various archived tar files...)
Totally disable all auto mounting of removable media. (if an application
fires up just cause I push in a cd or floppy, my first reflex is to turn
off the power strip...)
This is all in spite of suspecting that I suffer from *CRS <see below grin>
All of which makes it very unlikely that I'll accept having to get comfortable
with a different way of maintaining my system that I use on my other
linux file systems. (Especially one that gets pushed on me without first
convincing me that I want it, a surer way to insure that I won't want it
than that, I can't even imagine...)
</rant>
Well now you know why there's an (theWordy) in my name tag...
in any case, thanks for the reply. and suggestion and especially the clue
on re-enabling root...
Joe
* CRS : "Can't Remember Sh^Htuff" : In my case this mean that unless I
* do something the same way every day for a LONG time, or have examples
* of how I did it before (where I can still find them), I usually wind up
* scratching my head the next time I need to do a non-daily task.
