 This is completely normal for Ubuntu. What you should do to become root
is log in as the user you created at installation. If you do it in the
graphical log in, launch a shell and then type:
sudo /bin/bash
Answer the password question with the users password as you logged in
as.
If you want to be able to login directly as root, set a root password
with passwd.
To manipulate what users can become root, edit your /etc/sudoers-file.
