I have an Inspiron 5100 also.

It seems that Ubuntu has been kinda hard on my hardware as well. Since
installing I have had to replace a (pricey) hard disk. Recently, I
discovered that upon trying to copy a dvd under wine that my computer
shut down on me as one of the other posts had described. I thought it
was probably just a flaw with wine and thought no more of it. The next
time it happened I was using tar to backup the root file system. Poking
around a bit in the logs revealed nothing that would tell me why this
has been happening. A search through the dell forums reports that this
model tends to overheat after using it a while due to having a regular
processor in it instead of a mobile type processor. The dust on my
heat sink and fan did not appear to be overly excessive, but who knows.
So now the laptop is lying on the desk in pieces awaiting my fresh new
bottle of arctic silver v thermal grease. Hopefully this will solve
the problem. I8k reported that from a cold start the processor was
around 35C. It steadily rises as time goes on.

I would be interested in hearing from others how high their temps have
gotten in order to get a good feel for where I should be once I lay
down the thermal grease and get the laptop back together. Also, if
anyone has found a good way to keep the temperatures lower on this
model I certainly would like to hear that as well.

I dont have the link handy to the dell forums where this has been
expounded upon...mostly windows users seem to be in there. :P There
are some links in those dell support pages that give you steps on
taking apart the laptop and cleaning it up a bit.
