I'm not sure if I can help you with this error. I had to use 'Modem Class:
Class 1' for
my modem in order to receive faxes correctly. Mine is a  U.S. Robotics 56K
Voice EXT.

I have one of those USR Message modems you mention as well, but I have to
tell you that it won't
work very well with Ubuntu (or any other Linux ditsro I've tried). The best
program I've found is
tkusr (universe)

I can manage the modem and see the messages, but it has some problems to
display or
print faxes. I have never used the voice function of the Message Modem so I
can't tell
you anything about that.
