Faxmodem software

I have installed efax and seems to work fine for receiving faxes. But
when I try to use the "standby" mode, it hangs up.

This is the error:

efax-0.9a: 29:16 opened /dev/ttyS0

efax-0.9a: 29:19 using U.S. Robotics 56K Message Rev. 14.10.1 U.S.
Robotics 56K Message OK OK in class 2.0

efax-0.9a: 29:21 Error: modem command (S0=9) failed

efax-0.9a: 29:22 done, returning 3 (invalid modem response)

Supposedly, this faxmodem can be used as a voicemail and as a fax. When
I used Windows, I used to leave it on when I left, and it worked as an
answering machine, and also as a fax receiver. Then, when turning on
the computer again I could listen my voicemail and see faxes received
that were saved in the modem's memory. The modem is an external 3Com
U.S. Robotics 56K Message Modem.

Do you know how can I use it? I tried with "getty", but I couldn't run
the program.
