you cannot install a package using apt-get in a session of the LiveCD?
I'm surprised by this, but haven't tried it in a very long time.
Maybe the /etc/apt/source.list file is incorrect???

because by default Ubuntu comes with no open ports to the outside
world. Thus sshd couldn't be installed by default in Ubuntu; so there
is no point in having it sitting on the LiveCD, especially considering
that disk space on these CDs is at a premium.
