Okay, it won't let me create a volume group, because "No usable
physical volumes found. No physical volumes (i.e. partitions) were
found in your system. All physical volumes may already be in use.
You may also need to load some required kernel modules or re-partition
the hard drives."

Remembering that I had seen that message before when I had already
created a VG, I went to "Delete volume groups" and found that, unlike
the last time, the Ubuntu group is now there! Sheesh.

Trying again with a bigger /var. Well I don't think I used up
all the space on my VG with my LVs, so I'll try to resize the /usr
partition to "max"...

       [!] Partition disks

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition
/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-usr1 - Invalid argument. This means Linux
won't know about any changes you made to
/dev/mapper/Ubuntu-usr1 until you reboot - so you shouldn't
mount it or use it in any way before rebooting.

       ERROR!!!

Heh. You can't win.

Let's delete /usr with LVM configuration and re-make it. Okay, now I
have used up the whole VG (I think).

Now I select "Finish partitioning and write changes to disk"... the
screen goes blank for a moment, and then reappears just as it was!

Okay, I <Go Back> and try again. Same result :(. Maybe it was that
ERROR!!! that is hurting me. Well, it advised a reboot before
attempting to use something, so I'll ctrl-alt-del... and start again.
Hopefully I will have created some useful partitions and won't have to
go through this exercise again...
