thank you for the hint - finally ubuntu starts in x again for me... I
think i messed my system up by following the ubuntu starter guide at
ubuntuguide.org ... the changed repositories were perhaps a bad idea,
but I'm not sure how it happened (I am quite the linux newby) :)
