Figured it out!



Many thanks to Jimmie for the NoAccel post. For others with the same
issue ...



Boot into Ubuntu's recovery mode

Type in the following:

--------------------
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
--------------------


Find the line that starts with *-Section "Device"-*

Type in this line somewhere in that section:

--------------------
    Option     "NoAccel"
--------------------


Press Ctrl and X together to tell Nano you want to exit

Press Y to accept your changes

Press Enter to save the file as the default filename (should still be
/etc/X11/xorg.conf)

Reboot



>From what I've Googled, it looks like the newer ATI Xpress series video
devices and Xorg are having some issues.
