Parport : "can't claim device"

obviously. ;o)
At first I thought about the worse, like : the stuff I connected on the
parport must have killed said parport, I am in for a new
motherboard ! :-/
So just to be sure, I unplugged my DIY stuff, and plugged the laser
printer back onto the parport.... and it works just fine ! So the
parport is still in one piece, and the problem has to be 100% software.
It's the first time I use a program that needs the parport so maybe I am
missing something obvious.
The interesting bit, though, is that the program I am (trying to !) use
has been ported to Windows.... result : SAME PROBLEM !!!
The windows terms were, verbatim :

can't open device "giveio"
avrdude: failed to open parallel port "lpt1"

I am not too sure what to conclude from that...
