when you see that "i386" you know you're hosed because that's for an
Intel-compatible processor, not PowerPC.
The Java site does NOT have a PPC version! You can get a
linux-compatible PPC Java from IBM and Blackdown, but they have kinks,
too. I haven't been able to get them installed on my PowerBook. (Some
have.)
We should all be supporting one of the free versions so we can get out
of this trap.
Depending on what you need to do, Kaffe or gcj might work for you.
(Though in the case of your typical web Java applet, often not.) You
can find the relevant packages by searching for kaffe and for gcj in
Synaptic. There are some other free Java projects in the works, too.
