Customising Hoary live CD.

I've been trying to add a few applications to the live CD using the
instructions in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com//LiveCDCustomizationHowTo/view?searchterm=customize%20livecd . All seems to go well till I boot the burned CD. The boot process works apparently without problems until it get to the point where it says "Starting Preinstalled Session" when it fails. This has happened on a PC and laptop. I have used the process described to generate a new iso from the old iso, but made no changes to the packages, but with the same result. This suggests that there is a problem with either the recompression, or the creation of the iso image, or possibly even the burning of the CD (K3B used).
Has anyone else come across this? Any suggestions?
