I sometimes develop software in Java and, of course, I use a Sun JDK for
this. But I strongly support the idea of open source and as a Java
Developer I am interested in the question, if Java is a adequate
platform for open source development - especially for desktop
applications that should run under Linux. Of course, there are already
great open source projects implemented in Java. But most of them
addresses Developers or are design for use on servers.

On my point of view Java is only a seriously useful development language
for open source if there is a free platform. Of course, everyone who is
interested can install Sun's JDK for free but the main problem is that
you can't put a Java application in a open source repository (like
Ubuntu universe) if it depends on a non-free VM. Therefore we need a
open implementation of Java.

I simply ask myself if I should implement my software in Java, in Python
or if I should get into Mono. That's why I just want to check out how
much you can do with free Java implementations today. I saw a demo of
Eclipse and Java-GNOME which was quite impressive, at least for me. So I
am very happy that Eclipse (based on gcj/gij I think) is packaged in
Breezy. I definitely will take a look at this soon.
