How about Ubuntu Lite!!!!
www.ubuntulite.com
It is more designed for your Desktop machines. I do not know if it would
be compatible with a laptop(it may).
But you can still follow the package list off a server install of
Ubuntu. If so follow this guide
http://www.binonabiso.com/en/Ubuntu-miniRAM-HOWTO.html and I would
suggest that you add rox-filer for file browsing. You could still use
ubuntu lite for software issues support.
Do not use a live CD unless you copy it to the HDD. Just because the CD
is 50mb does not mean that the CD actually uses 50mb worth of memory
(128mb is the recommended minimum for puppy).
