new motherboard - reinstall ubuntu?

there's absolutely NO need to recompile your kernel with Ubuntu unless you've 
been mad enough to have created a custom one in the first place...

for the benefit of the OP, I have replaced the Motherboard, Processor, RAM,  
CD drive all in one fell swoop on this box and on first boot, Ubuntu set 
itself up correctly.
