I was able to answer my own question in a separate thread. I found
that when I booted with the live cd and checked Grub's menu.lst file,
that the update had changed the drive/partition information. (1,0)
became (0,0). I corrected this and things seem to be working fine now.
Still not sure why it happened in the first place, but at least I have
a working system again.
