Use Synaptic to install the msttcorefonts package.  It's available
in multiverse.  Since Synaptic runs with root permissions, you will
avoid the trouble with writing to the directory.

If you use Synaptic to search both Description and Name for the word
font, you will find an abundance of font packages.
