Thanks, worked great.  To restart X, I logged out, dropped back to a 
console, and switched to runlevel 3, then 2, then S, and I could still 
see the X screen via alt-F7.  Is that normal?  I ended up rebooting, 
and was then able to run nvidia-settings (I got a pretty NVidia splash 
screen at startup).
