GDM gone missing

Thanks for your informative reply, Michael. After running the 
diagnostics, I get this:
rc  gdm            2.6.0.7-0ubunt GNOME Display Manager

Therefore, I must have a problem. Am researching it now and will post 
the solution to the list for anyone that's interested.
