Mine works fine on NTSC, and the PAL channels that are close enough to
the NTSC frequencies. Here is my ~/.xawtv:

    #
    # Must be one of modes listed in /etc/fb.modes
    #
    fullscreen = 640x480-100
    # fullscreen = 768x576-75
    # fullscreen = 800x600-100
    # fullscreen = 1024x768-75
    mixer=line
    freqtab = us-cable
    keypad-ntsc = on
    osd = on
    jpeg-quality = 75
    mov-driver = avi
    mov-video = mjpeg
    # mov-fps = 30
    mov-audio = stereo
    mov-rate = 44100
    [defaults]
    [channel 9 KQED]
    channel = 9
    norm = ntsc
    input = television
    audio = stereo
    color = 50%
    bright = 50%
    hue = 50%
    contrast = 50%
    .
    .
    .

Try launching xawtv with "xawtv -parallel 8 -remote -noxv" for
starters. (Also try "xawtv -parallel 8 -remote" and "xawtv -parallel
8 -noxv" as alternatives-these control whether true color and/or the
way the xawtv writes to the screen-direct through overlay, or through
the window manager.)

For your audio, make sure you have an audio cable connecting the audio
line out of the Hauppauge WinTV-GO tuner card and the Line In of your
sound card. Hit the key-pad '+' key to turn the volume all the way up.
