I would suggest try STOP and START of Hotplug. At least it worked for me,
when the machine truly was unable to mount anything at the USB ports.
1. $ cd /etc/init.d
2. $ sudo ./hotplug stop
3. wait a few seconds
4. $ sudo ./hotplug start
anyhow, try it, I am not a crack.
