chroot setups

Hi all,
I'm currently running a 386 architecture but am thinking of trying the
amd64 now hoary's out. I read the developer wiki about chroot and I
understand (or think I do) that this would enable me to run i386
specific apps and libs in their own "environment".

If I do this can I boot in amd64 mode and setup the chroot to point to
my already isntalled i386 root partition (mounted in somewhere like
/var/chroot for example) or do I need to do an install in the chroot
itself? I'd like the latter option obviously as it saves disk space and
I don't need to maintain/update 3 environments :-).

Does anyone have any experience with this?
